BRAZIL - BAHIA - HELVECIA
The commemorative monument to João Flach was found in what had been the colony’s cemetery. After the death of his father Johann Martin Flach, one of the first Swiss to settle in the colony, João returned from Switzerland, where he had been studying agronomy, took over the family plantation, and expanded it considerably. He drowned in the Peruípe River in 1868 and left an estate worth around one million Swiss francs (in 1987 francs). Nova Viçoza, Bahia, Brazil. 2018
